Acidity
that causes heartburn is a common ailment which is faced by most individuals at
some point of time. An occasional spell of heartburn can be felt when a person
consumes too much of spicy food. Fried or fat rich food also has a similar
effect that makes digestion a problem and acidity an outcome.
The
lower esophageal sphincter is corked tightly after food has passed into the
stomach but sometimes due to acidity the LES muscles relax which allows the
stomach contents to gush into the esophagus. Sometimes it can also cause
vomiting when the leaked contents come out of the mouth in the form of vomit.
But sometimes this liquid also causes an unpleasant taste in the mouth.
Reasons that turn heartburn into GERD
Often
acid reflux is substituted by the term heartburn. There are many causes of Heartburn
which can be categorized into two different sections. First is eating habits
and second is lifestyle. When one is frequently encountering problems of
heartburn then another burning issue is Gastro esophageal reflux disease. To
understand this term it is important to know What Is GERD.
It
is a disorder that occurs due to the malfunction of the LES muscles. The LES is
also known as lower esophageal sphincter which is responsible for preventing
food from coming back up in the esophagus from the stomach. But when these
muscles fail to function properly then acidic contents seep inside the
esophagus which initially irritates this muscular tube but when this happens
often then the wall of the esophagus becomes inflamed. This is termed as GERD.
The
simple formula to prevent both GERD and heartburn is to maintain a good
lifestyle with regular exercise. Consuming a balanced diet in a timely fashion
is also absolutely necessary to keep acid reflux at bay.
